What do you specialize in?

I specialize in aging and older adulthood, specifically gerontology and geriatrics. In addition, I work with adults in all stages of life. Examples include academic stress in young adulthood, life-balance for the “Sandwich Generation” in middle adulthood, and changes in health, functioning, and living arrangements in older adulthood. My main clinical interests are anxiety, shame, adjustment, caregiver support, aging and older adulthood, management of life stressors, and overall wellness and well-being.

What do you think is important about your role as a therapist?

As a therapist, I strive to provide a warm, safe, and non-judgmental environment in which individuals feel comfortable exploring and applying growth and change. My holistic approach to therapy is eclectic and strengths-based, involving components of Solution-Focused Therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy, Psychoeducation, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

What is something you wish people knew about your specialty, or about therapy in general?

Oftentimes clients mention they are ashamed or concerned something is seriously wrong with them because they have sought therapy. I view the ability to seek therapy as a strength, not a weakness or flaw. While it is common for a person seeking therapy to experience varying emotions and different perspectives on his or situation, therapy can also be empowering. I remind clients that therapy is a process and an opportunity for change and growth, it can take time, is not always comfortable, but can be worthwhile.

Name an influential person or experience in your life.

I am grateful that I have been fortunate enough to relocate from the Westcoast to the Midwest to achieve my educational goals and pursue my career as a therapist. I was born and raised in Southern California and grew up in a diverse population. Moving to Michigan has allowed me to expand on that experience and has been a wonderful opportunity for professional and personal growth. In addition, I have learned something new from each client I have worked with. I really enjoy working as a therapist and feel it is a privilege to hear my clients’ stories and assist them on their journeys.
