“I now see how owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.” ~Brene´ Brown
Where is a pause, easy, or redo button when you need one?! Sometimes life can hit you in ways that you were not prepared for. Trying to recover from these hits can put you in a dark place where you may feel fear, isolation, defeat, or shame.
In this place, it may be very difficult to function. Are you fighting things like stress, depression, and/or anxiety just so that you can function in your daily roles and activities? Are you experiencing issues with your identity? Are you frustrated or confused about where you are in life right now? Do you need help “unpacking” your mind and clearing it out in a way that gives you the space you need to mentally breathe? Are you having trouble accepting your story and all of the changes that it has endured? Do you just need someone to speak your thoughts to out loud? Well, I would love to hear you and help you.
My name is Juanita Tookes and I am a licensed professional counselor and fourth-year Ph.D. candidate currently attending Oakland University. I obtained both my bachelor's degree (in psychology) and my master's degree (in counseling psychology) from Wayne State University. I have 11 years of clinical experience working in child and family services and community mental health. I have provided therapy and psychoeducational services in various settings including in-home, private practice, clinical facilities, community facilities, and in schools (K-12 and at the college level).
My goal as your counselor is to understand YOUR unique experience of life. In using treatment methods such as humanistic therapy, narrative therapy, and multicultural counseling you will give me the opportunity to hear how your problems may be impacted by personal characteristics and experiences that might be ignored or disregarded. I believe that you have a very powerful story. Let us work together on helping you to own it with pride!
